Chapter 3

The Osperian Forest, bathed in the dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, was alive with the sounds of nature. Chris, his senses heightened, was alert to every rustle of leaves and chirp of birds. Suddenly, AIDA's voice broke the tranquility.

"Quest available," she announced. Chris's heart skipped a beat. This was it, his first real adventure in Solaris!

AIDA explained the details. A bear-like creature, known as a Dortuk, was terrorizing a nearby village. The villagers were desperate for help, and a generous bounty of 6,750 gold was offered for its demise. Chris, despite a flicker of nervousness at the thought of facing such a beast, couldn't resist the call to action, especially with the lure of such a reward.

AIDA marked the village's location on his map, and Chris quickened his pace. As he approached, the sounds of chaos grew louder. Screams pierced the air, and villagers scattered in panic. Rounding a bend, Chris saw the source of the commotion: a massive, hulking Dortuk, its fur matted and its eyes burning with rage, was rampaging through the village.

Just as the Dortuk was about to swipe at a young woman, Chris drew his sword and charged, yelling to get the creature's attention. The beast turned, its fury now directed at him. AIDA's voice echoed in his mind, "Your sword can easily harm it. Be swift and precise."

With newfound confidence, Chris dodged the Dortuk's first charge, the creature's claws narrowly missing him. He lunged forward, his sword flashing in the sunlight, and pierced the Dortuk's side. The beast roared in pain, blood gushing from the wound.

"Critical hit!" AIDA exclaimed. "But it will take more to finish it."

The battle raged on. The Dortuk was a formidable opponent, its strength and size overwhelming. But Chris, with AIDA's guidance and his enhanced agility, managed to stay one step ahead. He dodged, parried, and countered, his sword finding its mark again and again. The Dortuk's roars grew weaker, its movements sluggish.

Finally, with one last, desperate lunge, Chris plunged his sword deep into the creature's heart. The Dortuk stumbled, its massive body collapsing to the ground with a resounding thud. Silence fell over the village, broken only by the sound of Chris's ragged breathing.

He had done it. He had faced his first real challenge in Solaris and emerged victorious. A wave of exhilaration washed over him, mixed with a profound sense of relief. He had proven himself, not just to the villagers, but to himself. He was no longer just an Earthling lost in a strange world; he was an adventurer, a hero. And his journey had only just begun.

As the dust settled, the young woman Chris had saved rushed towards him, her expression a mix of relief and gratitude. Her beauty was striking, her features delicate, and her figure... well, let's just say Chris found himself momentarily speechless. She was wearing a rather revealing top that showcased her ample bosom, and as she leaned in for a hug, Chris felt the full force of her gratitude pressed against him.

He blushed crimson, his heart pounding in his chest. "Th-thank you," he stammered, his voice cracking slightly. "I'm just glad I could help."

The young woman introduced herself as Violet, she giggled, her eyes sparkling. "You're quite the hero, aren't you?" she teased, her tone playful. Chris introduced himself more formally as other villages approached from all directions.

The thankful villagers showered Chris with thanks and praise. They offered him food and drink, their faces beaming with joy. The atmosphere was festive, a stark contrast to the terror that had gripped the village just moments before. Chris, despite his initial awkwardness, found himself enjoying the attention. He was happy to have helped, and the warmth of their gratitude filled him with a sense of purpose.

Later, as he checked his communicator, AIDA confirmed the bounty had been transferred. 6,750 gold now sat in his virtual account. Chris was surprised to learn that Solaris operated on a digital currency system, but he quickly shrugged it off. Money was money, after all, and he felt rich beyond his wildest dreams. Back home, 6,750 pieces of gold would be worth a small fortune, but here, maybe not so much. Still though, he was more than satisfied.

He spent a bit more time chatting with Violet, exchanging pleasantries and learning a bit about the village and its inhabitants. He couldn't help but notice the way she looked at him, her eyes lingering a bit longer than necessary, her smile a touch more flirtatious. He got the distinct impression that his heroic act had made quite an impression on her.

With a final wave goodbye, Chris set off once more, his heart lighter and his pockets (or rather, his virtual account) heavier. He had faced his first real challenge, earned his first reward, and perhaps even caught the eye of a beautiful woman. The world of Solaris was full of possibilities, and he was eager to explore them all.

Later in the day, as the sun began its descent, casting long shadows through the Osperian Forest, Chris decided to call it a day. He found a clearing, gathered some dry wood, and with a few sparks from gently taking a rock against his sword, built a small campfire. The crackling flames provided a comforting warmth, but the encroaching darkness and the unfamiliar sounds of the forest sent a shiver down his spine.

Suddenly, a twig snapped in the distance. Chris jumped to his feet, sword drawn, his heart pounding in his chest. He scanned the shadows, ready for whatever lurked within.

A figure emerged from the darkness. It was Violet, her silhouette illuminated by the flickering firelight. Chris relaxed, lowering his weapon.

"Violet? What are you doing all the way out here?" he asked, surprise evident in his voice.

She smiled, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "I couldn't let you go alone," she said. "You were pretty amazing back there, and well... I'm tired of the village life. I want to see the world, have some adventures."

Chris was taken aback. He hadn't expected anyone to follow him, let alone someone as... captivating as Violet. He gestured for her to join him by the fire, and she settled down gracefully, her movements fluid and graceful.

Violet pulled out some leftover Dortuk meat from a pouch and, with surprising skill, cooked it over the fire. The aroma of roasted meat filled the air, making Chris's stomach rumble.

"I'm a decent cook," she said with a wink. "And I have other skills too, if you know what I mean."

Chris blushed, but he couldn't deny the thrill of having such a capable and alluring companion. "Of course, you're welcome to join me," he said, his smile genuine. "It'll be great to have some company."

Violet beamed. "Great! I'll do my best to be useful."

As they shared the meal and the warmth of the fire, they talked late into the night. Violet shared stories of her life in the village, her dreams of adventure, and her hopes for the future. Chris, in turn, spoke of his own world, his journey to Solaris, and his newfound determination to explore this strange and wonderful realm.

Under the starlit sky, surrounded by the symphony of the forest, Chris felt a sense of contentment he hadn't experienced in a long time. He had a new friend, a purpose, and a whole world waiting to be discovered. The future was uncertain, but it was also filled with endless possibilities. And with Violet by his side, he was ready to face literally anything that came his way, maybe even zombies.

The morning light filtering through the trees woke Chris gently. He blinked his eyes open, only to find Violet nestled close, her chest pressed firmly against his. A warm blush crept up his cheeks. Had she gotten cold in the night? Carefully, he disentangled himself from her embrace, noticing her arm still draped over him and the shared blanket covering them both.

Violet stirred, stretching with a contented yawn. "Morning, sleepyhead," she said, her voice husky with sleep. "Did you sleep well?"

Chris nodded, his mind still reeling from the unexpected intimacy of their sleeping arrangement. "Yeah, I did," he replied, trying to sound casual.

After a quick breakfast of leftover Dortuk meat, Violet asked, "So, where are we headed today?"

Chris shrugged. "I wasn't really sure. I was just planning to follow the trail north."

Violet's eyes lit up. "The north leads to the Endless Plains, and then to the Darkmire," she explained. "It's a vast swamp, filled with all sorts of strange creatures and ancient ruins. It's said to be incredibly dangerous, but also full of hidden treasures."

At the mention of the Darkmire, Chris couldn't help but think of the Swamp of Sadness from the NeverEnding Story. He shuddered involuntarily.

Just as he was about to suggest a different destination, Violet exclaimed, "I've always wanted to see the Darkmire! I've heard so many stories about it."

AIDA's voice suddenly chimed in, "Warning: Chris's current level is not high enough for the Darkmire."

"Levels?" Chris asked, confused. "Like in a game?"

"Everyone in Solaris has a power rating, or level," AIDA explained. "After assessing your recent combat performance, I've determined your level to be 18. The Darkmire is recommended for levels 26 and above."

Chris was fascinated by this concept. He was already level 18? He hadn't even realized he was gaining experience. He then asked AIDA to assess Violet.

"Violet's current level is 3," AIDA stated matter-of-factly.

Violet bristled. "That's ridiculous!" she exclaimed. "This whole leveling system is flawed. You're just a stupid gadget, you don't know anything!"

Chris, however, thought back to the Dortuk encounter. Violet had been helpless against the creature, while he had dispatched it with relative ease. AIDA's assessment seemed to make sense.

"Maybe it's not so inaccurate," he said thoughtfully. "But don't worry, Violet. We'll level up together. I'll help you."

Violet calmed down, a hint of embarrassment in her eyes. "I'm sorry for snapping at AIDA," she said. "I've just never been assessed before, even though I knew it was a thing."

Chris smiled reassuringly. "No worries. We're a team now, right?"

With renewed determination, they set off once more, the Darkmire their ultimate goal. Chris was eager to explore this mysterious and dangerous place, and with AIDA and Violet by his side, he felt ready to face any challenge that came their way.

The abrupt transition from the dense Osperian Forest to the vast expanse of the Endless Plains took Chris by surprise. The trees simply ended, giving way to a seemingly infinite stretch of tall grass swaying in the breeze. "Déjà vu," Chris remarked, "I've been through these plains before, but from the south."

AIDA's voice chimed in, "The Endless Plains encircle the Osperian Forest on almost all sides. Their vastness is the origin of their name." Chris nodded, the sheer scale of the plains finally sinking in.

As they journeyed deeper, Chris noticed a fleeting movement in the distance. A small, fluffy ball seemed to pop out of the grass for a split second before vanishing. It reappeared a few moments later, bouncing playfully in the wind.

"What was that?" Chris asked, pointing towards the curious sight.

"That's a Kepp," AIDA informed him. "They're similar to rabbits from Earth, but much fluffier and more agile."

Violet added with a hint of annoyance, "And they're a real nuisance. They're attracted to shiny things and love to snatch them from unsuspecting travelers."

Chris, not keen on losing any of his belongings, especially not his precious Communicator, agreed to keep an eye out for the fluffy thieves.

But their vigilance proved futile. A sudden tug at his side startled Chris. He looked down to see a Kepp clinging to his pocket, its tiny paws clutching his Communicator! He lunged for the creature, but it was remarkably quick, bouncing away with surprising speed.

"Help!" AIDA's voice cried out as she was carried away within the ball of fur.

Violet reacted instantly, chasing after the Kepp with Chris hot on her heels. Just as they were about to catch it, the creature disappeared down a narrow hole in the ground.

Chris cursed under his breath. "There's no way I can fit in there!"

Violet, ever resourceful, didn't hesitate. She began shedding her clothes, leaving Chris momentarily stunned. With a mischievous grin, she stripped down to her underwear and dove headfirst into the hole before Chris could even protest.

A muffled voice echoed from the tunnel, "Give me a push! I'm stuck!"

Chris peered into the hole, Violet's shapely legs and backside the only thing visible. He gingerly grabbed her ankles and pushed, but she remained firmly wedged.

"HARDER!" Violet's voice urged.

With a deep breath, Chris braced himself and gave a powerful shove. Violet disappeared into the darkness.

Minutes ticked by, and Chris's anxiety grew. Had she gotten lost? Was she hurt? Just as he was about to attempt a rescue himself, Violet's hands emerged from a different hole, triumphantly holding AIDA aloft.

"Gimme a hand, Chris!" she called out.

Chris rushed over and pulled her out, nearly dislodging her bra in the process. Violet, seemingly oblivious, dusted herself off, covered in dirt and Kepp fur.

"How did it go?" Chris asked, still a bit flustered.

Violet grinned. "Tight squeeze, but I got the little thief. It tried to bite me, so I had to teach it a lesson."

AIDA chimed in, "Congratulations, Violet! You've leveled up to level 4!"

Violet cheered, her spirits lifted. She quickly got dressed, and the trio continued their journey, a bit more wary of the adorable but thieving Kepp. Chris couldn't help but smile. Their adventure was certainly proving to be eventful, and he had a feeling it was only going to get more exciting from here.
