Gear Overview
Gear encompasses a vast array of items, from conventional weaponry and armor to shields, jewelry, runes, gadgets, bags, and clothing. It extends beyond combat essentials, catering to player imagination.
Your character's gear is more than just statistical bonuses—it forms a crucial part of your identity in Solaris. Each piece tells a story and contributes to your unique place in the world. Furthermore, the quality of your gear directly influences your combat capabilities, determining your effectiveness in battles against other players and creatures.
Naming Your Gear
Every item, no matter how ordinary, should possess a unique name. Even when purchasing a generic item, such as a Longsword, from the market, consider renaming it into something distinctive and convey that new name upon making the purchase.
Effective gear names often reflect:
- Your character's personality or background
- The item's appearance, material, or origin
- Cultural or historical references within the game world
- Special properties or capabilities the item possesses
For example, instead of simply carrying a "Longsword," name it "Frostbite: Blade of the Northern Wastes" or "Honor's Edge, Heirloom of House Valaren." These names create immediate interest and storytelling opportunities.
Creating Gear Descriptions
Gear descriptions should capture the item's essence and reveal its history, providing insights into how the character acquired it. Even for market-purchased items, players should exercise creativity to breathe new life into ordinary objects.
A compelling gear description might include:
- Physical details (materials, craftsmanship, unique features)
- Sensory elements (how it feels, sounds, or smells)
- Backstory or provenance (who made it, previous owners)
- Subtle hints about any magical or special properties
- Personal significance to your character
Essential Gear
Essential Gear (EG) is a category of items with unique enhancement capabilities, significantly influencing a character's combat prowess. It encompasses accessories, armor, ranged weapons, relics, shields, and melee weapons. Solaris characters may possess all or some of these items, with the option to upgrade them as they progress. While upgrading Essential Gear is beneficial, it is not mandatory.
Each piece of Essential Gear directly affects specific combat statistics, making them crucial for success in battle:
Gear Type | Primary Stats Affected |
---|---|
Accessories | Dodge (DOD) |
Armor | Armor Rating (ARM), Health (HIT) |
Ranged Weapons | Ranged Attack Power (RAP), Dodge (DOD) |
Relics | Magic Attack Power (MAP), Resist (RES) |
Shields | Armor Rating (ARM), Deflect (DEF) |
Melee Weapons | Weapon Attack Power (WAP), Deflect (DEF) |
Quality Tiers & Combat Impact
Upgrading your Essential Gear significantly enhances your combat effectiveness. Each tier provides an improvement over the previous. The quality tiers are as follows:
Quality Grade | Multiplier | Acquisition |
---|---|---|
None | 1 | Default state |
Common | 3 | Available for gold |
Noteworthy | 6 | Available for gold |
Exceptional | 12 | Available for gold |
Ascended | 24 | Highest gold-purchasable tier |
Legendary | 48 | Storyline content only |
These quality multipliers directly affect your combat statistics. For example, upgrading from Noteworthy (6) to Exceptional (12) equipment doubles that item's contribution to your stats.
Legendary Gear Requirements: To be eligible for Legendary gear, a character must have participated in at least 50% of the current active storyline content. This represents the highest possible tier of equipment in Solaris.
Accessories
Accessories directly influence a character's dodge rating. Accessories can be many things, ranging from a piece of jewelry to an article of clothing. Some may consider a necklace as an accessory and others could use their cloak, boots, or even a bracelet as an accessory. Accessories are considered an important piece of Essential Gear for all characters, as the ability to dodge during combat is critical.
Accessories are particularly valuable for:
- Classes with high Agility like Assassins and Hunters
- Characters focused on ranged combat
- Any character who wants to avoid taking damage
Combat Impact: Your accessory's quality directly affects your Dodge (DOD) rating, which determines your chance (up to 80% maximum) to completely avoid incoming attacks.
Armor Types
Armor, along with shields, directly influences a character's physical armor rating. Armor is a critical component of Essential Gear. Armors include:
- Cloth: Armors made of fabric, favored by mages and other spellcasters
- Racial: Natural protection or culturally specific armors unique to certain races
- Light: Armors made of animal hides, leather, or other flexible materials
- Medium: Armors made of chain or scale, balancing protection and mobility
- Heavy: Armors made of heavy plates, offering maximum protection
Combat Impact: Your armor's quality directly affects your Armor Rating (ARM), which reduces incoming physical damage by a percentage (up to 80% maximum). It also significantly impacts your total Health (HIT) calculation: Vitality × Armor Equipment Quality × 150.
Magical Relics
Relics directly influence a character's magic attack power and magic resist rating. A magical relic enhances a character's ability to cast magical spells and use the magical forces of Solaris. Relics come in all shapes and sizes. They can be worn as jewelry or wielded like a weapon. The choice is up to the player. Relics are considered to be Essential Gear to nearly all characters, even non-casters.
Relics are particularly important for:
- Mages, Necromancers, Druids, and other spellcasting classes
- Characters with high Intelligence attributes
- Anyone who wants protection against magical attacks
Combat Impact: Your relic's quality affects two critical stats:
- Magic Attack Power (MAP): Intelligence × Relic Quality × 15
- Resist (RES): Reduces incoming magical damage by a percentage (up to 80% maximum)
Melee Weapons
Weapons directly influence a character's melee attack power and deflect rating. Weapons are a critical component of Essential Gear. Weapons include:
- Racial: Claws, talons, fangs, tails, etc.
- Light: Knives, daggers, short swords, fist weapons, etc.
- Medium: Swords, axes, maces, hammers, etc.
- Heavy: Two-handed swords, clubs, mauls, axes, etc.
Combat Impact: Your weapon's quality affects:
- Weapon Attack Power (WAP): Strength × Weapon Quality × 15
- Deflect (DEF): Your ability to block or parry physical attacks (up to 80% maximum)
Warriors and Knights particularly excel with melee weapons due to their class specializations in Deflect.
Ranged Weapons
Ranged weapons directly influence a character's ranged attack power. Ranged weapons consist of bows and crossbows or anything that fires some sort of ammunition over a long distance. The ability of a character to deal damage while out of harm's way makes it a popular choice among many characters. All characters with a ranged weapon are considered to be carrying some sort of quiver or equivalent that contains mundane ammo and is assumed to have enough for a battle and never run out.
Combat Impact: Your ranged weapon's quality affects:
- Ranged Attack Power (RAP): Agility × Ranged Weapon Quality × 15
- Contributes to your Dodge (DOD) rating
Hunters and Assassins particularly excel with ranged weapons due to their class specializations in Dodge.
Shields
Shields, along with armor, directly influence a character's physical armor rating. Shields utilize the same upgrade system as other Essential Gear. Any race or class may use a shield, there are no restrictions on this. Shields come in all shapes and sizes. They can be made from any material, even energy.
Combat Impact: Shields uniquely enhance both defensive capabilities:
- Armor Rating (ARM): Reduces physical damage taken
- Deflect (DEF): Increases chance to block physical attacks
This dual benefit makes shields particularly valuable for Knights, who receive specialization bonuses to both Deflect and Armor.
Non-Essential Gear
This section covers non-essential gear, which cannot be upgraded and is not used in combat except for mounts. While these items don't provide direct combat benefits, they offer other advantages:
- Clothing: Sometimes has special properties or provides roleplay opportunities
- Companions: Pets that accompany your character, offering companionship and storytelling opportunities
- Mounts: Can be ridden and may provide travel advantages
- Gadgets: Useful tools for various situations in and out of combat
- Holiday Items: Special items that provide EXP or gold boosts during specific events
While non-essential, these items allow for greater character customization and may provide unique benefits in specific scenarios.
Enchantments
Essential Gear can be enchanted by skilled Enchanters to imbue it with additional capabilities, granting characters an edge in battle. These enchantments, meticulously crafted by each Enchanter, possess diverse effects, ranging from enhancing combat prowess to augmenting a character's unique abilities. To explore the vast array of enchantments available, visit the market and consult with the Enchanters directly.
Enchantments can provide various benefits beyond the standard quality multipliers, such as:
- Additional damage types or effects
- Stat boosts beyond the normal calculations
- Resistance to specific damage types
- Special abilities that can be activated during combat
- Synergies with your character's custom abilities
When combining high-quality gear with powerful enchantments, characters can achieve extraordinary combat potential.
